Chamomile (German)
A Complete Guide To The Healing Art
© 1995 Kathi Keville, Mindy Green
 (Excerpted from Aromatherapy, Crossing Press)

German chamomile oil contains green-blue chamazulene (azul means blue), a potent anti-inflammatory constituent produced during distillation. In 1664, when chamomile was first distilled in glass, the distillers were surprised to see the blue color, which they previously thought was due to a reaction of the oil to the copper stills.

Family: Asteraceae (Compositae)
Extraction: Distilled from flowers. (The flowers are tiny, so they are usually accompanied by stems when distilled.) The odor is deep, sweet and herbaceous.
Medicinal Action: This versatile essential oil treats the inflammation of sore muscles, sprains, tendons and joints, as well as headaches, diarrhea, digestive tract ulcers, asthma and allergies. It helps reduce indigestion, PMS, menstrual pain, liver damage and children's hyperactivity. It also destroys various types of intestinal worms and improves immune system activity.
Cosmetic/Skin Use: Chamomile is ideal on all complexion types, including sensitive, puffy or inflamed conditions. It also treats allergies, boils, rashes and enlarged capillaries.
Emotional Attribute: This potent antidepressant helps those who experience oversensitivity, stress, anxiety, hysteria, insomnia or suppressed anger (especially when associated with the past).
