Not such a deathly risk

New research has found that the number of deaths associated with obesity is far lower than previously believed. The study, carried out by the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control (CDC), found that 112,000 Americans died as a direct result of their obesity in 2000, a much more modest figure than the 414,000 estimated in a separate report (JAMA, 2005; 293: 1861-7, 1868-74).
