H erbal Medicine

Hematuria can give rise to a red or brown color in the urine. If the amount of blood is small it might not show visually but can be detected by a number of simple tests. This symptom may be associated with a wide range of conditions, some minor and others quite severe. Competent diagnosis is crucial. The bleeding will occur at a site of physical trauma, such as a stone cutting the tissue or bleeding from a foci of infection.

It is often possible to reduce or stop such bleeding with herbs, but this does not necessarily mean the trauma has been healed. The suggestions given here are to be applied within the context of treatments that address the diagnosed cause.

Actions indicated for this symptom:
Astringents will staunch the bleeding. They may not be powerful enough in cases such as large kidney stones.
Anti-inflammatories will ease the inflamed tissue thus reducing the bleeding.
Anti-microbials will facilitate the body ridding itself of any pathogens present., thus reducing inflammation and the resulting bleeding.
Specific Remedies
A number of the diuretic plants mentioned above have an astringent effect. The most useful are Periwinkle (Vinca major), Horsetail (Equisetum arvense), Ladies Mantle (Alchemilla arvensis) and Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)

One possible prescription
Vinca major
Capsella bursa-pastoris
Zea mays
Achillea millefolium
equal parts of dried herb.
infuse 2 teaspoonfuls to a cup and drink 1 cup every 2 hours

This combination supplies demulcent, diuretic and mild anti-microbial actions in addition to the astringency.
