The term anti-cancer herb is all too emotive and can build up false hopes. The National Cancer Institute defines these terms in the following way A cytotoxic agent is toxic to tumors in laboratory cultures. Anti-tumor activity occurs if this toxicity occurs to tumor cells in living animals.

Essiac, a harmless herbal tea, was used by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse to successfully treat thousands of cancer patients from the 1920s until her death in 1978 at the age of ninety. Refusing payment for her services, instead accepting only voluntary contributions
