    The American Association of Acupuncture and Bio-Energetic Medicine (AAABEM) was founded on March 9, 1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii, as a non-profit professional education and research organization. It is a professional association created to disseminate information on acupuncture and bio-energetic medical science, to promote clinical applications in these fields, to encourage open discussion and research in these and related fields, and to forge the way for the integration of bio-energetic medicine with conventional medicine. It is an association of like-minded physicians and others dedicated to exploring clinical studies to better their service to their profession and the public.

    Our broad field of interest includes the entire spectrum of technologies and tools used in bio-energetic, subtle energy, and bio-informational medicine. These include acupuncture, electro-medical modalities, homeopathy, and herbal medicines. Our research goal is the scientific evaluation and validation of these methods using controlled research designs. Most of our studies make use of a technique traditionally called Electro-Acupuncture According to Voll (EAV), which today is also referred to as electro-dermal screening (EDS).

    Past activities of the AAABEM include the following:

    1. Developed and funded several research projects in conjunction with the University of Hawaii, with results published in articles in the American Journal of Acupuncture: * Case studies on EAV at a family practice office; * EAV-based allergy screening;
    * EAV-based diabetes screening;
    * EAV-medicine testing in diabetes patients; and,
    * EAV instrumentation.

    2. Past events sponsored and promoted by AAABEM in Honolulu, Hawaii:

    * First International Conference on Bio-energetic Medicine: Past, Present, and Future, Sept. 30 to Oct. 7, 1989, University of Hawaii at Manoa, East West Center (cosponsored with the Foundations for East-West Medicine, Taipei and Honolulu);
    * Conference and Workshops in EDS, Nov. 1 to 3, 1991, Pacific Beach Hotel;
    * Conference and Workshops in EDS, Feb. 23 to 25, 1996, Hawaiian Village Hotel;

    3. Establishment in 1990 of an institutional review board (IRB) to facilitate research by members in Bio-energetic medicine;

    4. Future events:

    5. Understanding of Bio-energetic Medicine. Aug. 8 to 10, 1997, University of Hawaii at Manoa, East West Center (cosponsored with the Foundations for East-West Medicine, Taipei and Honolulu); and,

    Additional conferences and workshops in EDS, dates and places to be announced.

    Modern medical technology has progressed rapidly, but despite the various advances in medicine, there is so much more that is not known. To comprehend more fully the nature of disease and health, medical science and the health care delivery system should make use of all that is known from other cultures and from different schools of thought within medicine. Today we are living in a medical renaissance where western medicine is now becoming receptive to some of the traditional approaches in Eastern medicine. There is an urgent need to research, interpret, and integrate the practices of traditional and contemporary medicine from different cultures.

    The FOUNDATION FOR EAST-WEST MEDICINE, the sister organization of AAABEM in Honolulu and Taipei, is a non-profit organization that has been established to address these needs and to thus provide greater medical benefits to all humanity. Understanding the concepts and practices of Eastern and Western medicine with a holistic approach to health care will assist in the prevention of illness and prevent the progression of many chronic and degenerative diseases. Health benefits will be realized by the utilization of the best that both modern Western medicine and the most successful of health practices from the East have to offer.

    There is a profound need for integration. Eastern medicine is exerting greater influence on Western medical concepts, more than ever before, and for a very good reason. The wealth of medical experience in Eastern cultures is such that, if interpreted scientifically, it may help to address many difficult modern health issues.

    It should be recognized that traditional medicine has always been an integral part of human cultures. In many countries, especially in rural areas, traditional medicine has continued to provide the primary health care. The World Health Organization has placed great emphasis on the promotion and development of traditional medicine as part of its global health-care strategy. The World Health Organization has passed the resolution WHA44.34 on May 16, 1991: "recognizing the important contribution of traditional medicine to the provision of essential care."

    Many countries legally recognize the value of traditional medicine as a system of health-care delivery in its own right: France, Germany, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt and Sudan are but a few examples. Among the practices associated with traditional medicine in Asia, those of China and India are based on an accumulation of practical knowledge and clinical experience dating back three thousand years. However, unlike modern science, whose breakthroughs are recognized as soon as they are announced in the media, traditional medicine seems to be particularly inept at promoting its achievements. There is an urgent need to close the gap between one part of the world that depends primarily on traditional practice for its health care and the other half that relies exclusively on Western medical concepts. Both sides stand to gain from the results of a successfully integrated East-West medicine.

    Such established Western practices as chemical analyses, laboratory testing, and operational procedures should also be integrated with Eastern medicine. Modern technology has contributed facilities such as computers and monitoring devices, and techniques such as medical imaging and patient databases to the day-to-day practice of Eastern and Western medicine. Not only have these facilities provided a dialogue between practitioners of both disciplines, but more importantly, they have made earlier diagnoses of the causes of illness possible, thereby preventing the progression of many chronic and degenerative diseases. Understanding the concepts and practices of traditional and modern medicine, East and West, is crucial to the promotion and realization of such an integrated health care system. The challenge is formidable, but it can be met with a combination of traditional clinical experience and modern medical knowledge. Integrating Eastern and Western medicine is therefore a worthy and timely endeavor that will benefit all.

    It is precisely for this purpose that the Foundation for East-West Medicine has been established: to achieve the best health benefits that an integrated 'East-West' medicine has to offer. The Foundation is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization committed to:

    1. Translating, promoting, and supporting the adaptation of research results into new diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative methods that may be appropriate for specific national institutions or ethnic groups.
    2. Educating health professionals and the public about the benefits of a newly tested integration of Eastern and Western medicine.
    3. Coordinating related research projects, including resources, conducted by various research institutions and facilitate their completion and publication of results.
    4. Initiating new research projects emphasizing the assignment of subjects with suitable independent variables, assessments, analyses, interpretations, and extrapolations.
    5. Collecting and disseminating information relevant to the objectives of the Foundation. Publishing newsletters in different languages in order to facilitate communication among researchers worldwide.
    6. Providing related education and training to a broad spectrum of health-care workers.
    7. Publishing research results in medical textbooks and journals. Incorporating those traditional medical practices and remedies that have been clinically proven to be of medical value into the mainstream of modern medicine.
    8. Providing more medical benefits to the public with integrated treatments from new advances made in both Eastern and Western medicine.

    THE CLINIC FOR EAST WEST MEDICINE
    No. 6-1, Lane 343, Sec. 2
    Shihpai Rd., Taipei 112
    Taiwan, R.O.C.

    The Clinic for East-West Medicine, a sister organization of the Foundation for East-West Medicine, was founded in August of 1990. A wide range of services are offered within the clinic, and through referral and consultation the clinic can serve as a center for complete health care. All methods used at the clinic are supported by the most current medical theory, and all instrumentation is state of the art. But what makes the clinic unique is the complete integration of modern and traditional, Eastern and Western medical practices. In addition to standard procedures one would expect from a medical doctor, the clinic offers the following:

    Complete Family Health Care:
    Family health care is central to all of our services and includes preventative medicine and treatment of all common illnesses. But the general family health care provided at the clinic differs greatly from standard treatment in its strong, positive emphasis on the factors that help maintain health and strengthen the body and spirit, such as nutrition, exercise, psychological support, and chi-kung meditation.

    Complete, Holistic Medical Examination:
    Central to our examination procedure is the electrodermal screening device, a computerized device used to measure the body's energy systems. Because this bio-energy and the information it contains emanates from distinct areas within the body, examination with the device allows the doctor to focus on the actual causes of disorders. For example, it is possible to determine the exact cause of allergies, the presence of pesticides within the body, the effect and proper dosage of all types of medication (before they are administered), and distinguish both physiological and psychological causes of disturbances.

    Pain Clinic:
    At the pain clinic, effective treatment can be administered for most acute or chronic conditions, including muscle soreness, neuralgia, numb hands and feet, and sports injuries such as sprains and joint problems. Procedures include eastern and western massage techniques, rehabilitative exercise, and acupuncture.

    Detoxification:
    Using completely natural materials administered either orally or by injection, it is possible to remove pathogens that have entered the body, increasing the body's resistance to disease and lowering the biological age of the entire system. In addition to conditions commonly treated with traditional Chinese medicine, the Clinic for East-West Medicine offers traditional Chinese medical treatments for disorders of the digestive tract, weight loss, insomnia, loss of appetite, back pain, male and female infertility, impotence, leukorrhea, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, allergic rhinitis, hepatitis, hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenia, and sciatica.

    And...
    Other services offered at the clinic through consultation and referral include obstetrics and gynecology, dentistry, psychiatric counseling, hypnosis therapy, and chi-kung lessons and therapy.

    We at the Clinic for East-West Medicine take pride in both the quality and breadth of the services we offer. Our patients can rest assured that the services they receive will be the best available, regardless of the country or medical philosophy from which the methods originate. At our clinic, all available sources of medical knowledge are used, with the single goal of treating the patient as a whole human being.
