 Health Hint #258
Simple Steps against Herpes
Excerpted from "A Year of Health Hints"
365 Practical Ways to Feel Better and Live Longer

Herpes simplex virus is generally transmitted via genital secretions. Symptoms include sores with blisters on the genital area and anus. If infected for the first time, you may experience flu-like symptoms such as swollen glands, fever, and body aches, but subsequent attacks are almost always much milder, and much shorter in duration.

A number of tests exist to diagnose herpes but so far no cure for genital herpes exists. You can, however, take the following steps to decrease discomfort during an outbreak.

Soak the affected area in a mild salt solution. (Sitz baths are convenient.)
To keep the infection from spreading, apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream to the sores.
Take a mild pain reliever.
Ask your doctor about taking the antiviral drug acyclovir (brand name Zovirax).

To avoid spreading the virus to your eyes, don't touch your eyes during an outbreak. Also, avoid sexual intercourse when the herpes virus is active. Even condoms may not prevent the virus from infecting your partner during its active stage.
