Then: Kava kava, St. John’s Wort;  
Now: Relora, 5Htp (there are many, many more good ones)

The herbal blend called Relora controls cortisol levels and alleviates anxiety. 5Htp does for me what the St. John’s wort did, without the two month wait time (works similarly to tryphtophan). Kava kava was great for me, but because of my liver’s history I want as few risks to my liver as possible, so having the 5Htp option has been great.

Hormonal Balance
Then: kelp (capsules), L-tyrosine
Now: Kelp (liquid), L-tyrosine, Human Growth Hormone (hGH) “releasers” like L-ornithine, L-arginine (safer than injections) ; 7-Keto DHEA (may be safer than conventional DHEA); Dong quai and chaste tree berry to moderate estrogen-progesterone levels. Melatonin at night.

Use of hormones and their precursors are best done under a doctor’s supervision. Regarding the dong quai and chaste tree berry, women at other life stages may require progesterone creams, black cohosh or other bio-identical plant-based hormones. It is important to note that when it comes to all hormones, more is not necessarily better and may pose problems when it comes to hormones like DHEA, hGH or melatonin.

Overall Well-Being, Energy and Anti-Aging:
Then: CoQ10, Multi-vitamin-mineral-superfood complex, extra B vitamins (capsules)
Now: CoQ10, now in “Q-gel” form (energy, heart health); Multi-vitamin-mineral-superfood complex, extra B vitamins (liquid, sublingual); green or white tea; a green powder (mixed in a no-sugar smoothie) detoxifies and provides enzymes for healing, Acetyl L-carnitine, which can pass the blood-brain barrier, unlike conventional L-carnitine; L-carnosine, which was shown to inhibit a type of protein breakdown in the skin and tissues, and also to reverse several aging markers in rats and cultured cells.

Other “elective” supplements I take:

  • Supplements from cruciferous vegetables for breast and skin health and anti-inflammatory benefits

  • MGN-3, a unique medicinal mushroom and immune boosting blend for when I'm over-taxed or under the weather

  • Phosphatidyl choline for healthy cell membranes; also promotes a healthy skin barrier. I mix lecithin granules into my smoothie.

  • Gamma E Tocopherol/Tocotrienols for the full benefit of the vitamin E family

  • Phaseolamin-based carb-blocking supplements if I’m going out for Italian, Indian or Mexican or about to indulge in movie popcorn.

    Start slowly with supplements. If you are in good general health, a high-potency multi-nutrient regimen is a good way to start.
