What Doctors Don't Tell You: SHORT TAKES
What Doctors Don't Tell You © (Volume 11, Issue 2)

* Not all women respond the same way to conventional drugs used to treat osteoporosis. American researchers have found that women on a regimen of either alendronate or raloxifene appear to lose as much as 4 per cent of their bone density in the first year of treatment. Nevertheless, 83 per cent may then experience a small gain of 4.7 per cent in the second year on the drug (or no net gain overall). Conversely, those who gain at least 8 per cent during the first year will lose, on average, 1 per cent during the second year (JAMA, 2000; 283: 1318-21).

* Do night lights cause myopia? Not, according to the latest study of 1220 children (Nature, 2000; 404: 142-4). What researchers did find, however, was that myopic parents were more likely to light the rooms of their infants, which may have created false reports of such a link.
